FAQ

How is LayerZero architected?

LayerZero is a modular cross-chain messaging system built on three primitives: the Endpoint, the DVN (Decentralized Verifier Network), and the Executor. Each chain has an immutable Endpoint contract. Applications configure which DVNs verify their messages and which Executor delivers them. This decouples message origination, verification, and execution — allowing every application to customize its own security and delivery model.

How does a cross-chain message flow through LayerZero?

A message on LayerZero moves through four stages. First, the source Endpoint records the message. Second, the application's configured DVN providers independently verify that the message was sent. Third, the destination Endpoint accepts the verified message once the configured DVN threshold is met. Fourth, the Executor delivers the message to the destination application. Each stage is separate, so no single actor controls the full path of a message.

What is the difference between an Endpoint, a DVN, and an Executor?

The Endpoint is the smart contract applications interact with. A DVN (Decentralized Verifier Network) independently verifies that a message sent on the source chain actually happened. The Executor delivers the verified message on the destination chain. Applications (including asset issuers) choose which of 55+ DVN providers verify their messages and at what confirmation thresholds; the Endpoint enforces those settings on every transaction.

How does LayerZero support non-EVM chains?

LayerZero's architecture is chain-agnostic. The Endpoint contract is implemented in the native environment of each chain. All Endpoints expose the same send-and-receive interface, so an application built for one chain can send to any other with the same integration. LayerZero is live on 170+ chains, spanning EVM and non-EVM environments including Solana, Aptos, TON, Stellar, and Tron.

Is LayerZero a bridge, a rollup, or a Layer 2?

LayerZero is none of those. It is a cross-chain messaging system that lets any application send data, including instructions to mint, burn, or update state, across independent chains. A bridge locks assets on one chain and mints wrapped copies on another. A rollup or Layer 2 executes transactions off-chain and settles them to a base layer. LayerZero does neither. Bridges, wrapped tokens, and cross-chain applications can be built on top of LayerZero, but LayerZero itself is the messaging layer underneath.
